in terms of his name. let's begin with our top story. young man from ohio in federal custody accused of plotting an attack on the u.s. capitol. nbc's justice correspondent pete williams has more on this. pete, good morning to you. >> reporter: investigators say this 20-year-old wanted to carry out his attack at a way of supporting the isis terror group. he talked about his plans to somebody he thought was like minded but who turned out to be working for the fbi. the plan federal prosecutors say was to set off pipe bombs at the u.s. capitol, then shoot people as they fled. fbi investigators say christopher lee cornell, age 20 from you bursuburban cincinnati, first came to their attention last august when he began posting messages on twitter calling himself raheel and expressing support for the isis terror group. he soon met someone in the cincinnati area he thought was sympathetic, but who was actually an undercover operative for the fbi. on wednesday cornell took a

further step in his plot, going to the shooting range and buying who rifles like this along with 600 rounds of ammunition and the fbi and manager watched closely. >> as soon as the purchase was over and he left the door, several agents came out and tackled him here in the parking lot and took him down. >> reporter: according to court documents, cornell said he drew inspiration from anwar al awlaki and videos from isis and he says the brothers over there, isis, quote, gave a thumbs up for acts of violent jihad. >> this new battleground in the terrorist war against us, and that's social media being used to communicate with people who are willing to carry out desperate maniacal acts to kill americans. >> reporter: family members believe the fbi pushed him to do something he would not have done on his own. >> i think a lot of it was coercion. he got coerced. he didn't have the kind of money to carry out any terrorist act.

>> reporter: no comment from his public defender. federal officials say there was never any danger to the public because he was under close watch for months and he never bought components to make bombs. >> thanks, pete. the u.s. fight against isis is getting additional help from france. secretary of state john kerry is making his way to that city four days after the massive unity rally. bill neely is in paris. >> reporter: good morning. secretary of state kerry said he came to share a hug with paris. he came to talk about the aftermath of a massacre paris just can't forget this morning. again, the fun lerals of the cartoonists from "charlie hebdo." hebdo."

new images emerged of the supermarket killer in a bulletproof vest. his jewish hostages huddled together, a stroller abandoned. he ordered one hostage to destroy the cttv cameras. four jews died here. the massacre at the magazine has been claimed by al qaeda. in a video praising the gunmen as heroes. they boasted as they reloaded and shot at police, they killed the "charlie hebdo" magazine. >> they did not kill it. 5 million copies are being printed. the first run sold out in hours. many buying to support free speech. the staff nicknaming it the survivor's edition. this famous muslim comedian is on the front pages today charged by police with defending terrorism. after he identified himself as one of the killers. more than 50 other muslims have been arrested on similar charges. muslims have also been the victims of a backlash. more than 50 attacks against them.

time in 19 days rejoining their families back on solid ground hours after making history. at the summit, a celebration like never before because this hasn't happened before. tommy caldwell pulling himself over the dawn wall followed by kevin jorgeson. hugs with their feet finally planted on top of el capitan, cameras rolling on history. >> this is the moment that has been so many years in the making. we were here live. >> reporter: our nbc team's 8 mile hike to the top, a cake walk compared to the grueling 2 1/2 weeks climbers spent suspended on the side of this cliff. >> some of the most precarious climbing i've ever done. >> reporter: inup 3,000 feet of smooth granite, sometimes falling down, never giving up on a climb once thought impossible until now. from the meadow below, family members watching the final few seconds of the climb.

the former direct aror was ousted last year after a man armed with a knife scaled the white house fence and got into the executive mansion. if the four executives don't resign or retire, they will be re-assigned. today pope francis is in the philippines, asia's biggest catholic nation. tens of thousands lined the streets of manila. the pope says the visit will focus on the poor, the exploited and victims of injustice. earlier he spoke about recent shootings in france saying religion should never be used to justify violence. surveillance video captured the moment a man barreled through a car wash. you can see the white car rolling to the entrance. an employee running alongside. another angle shows one of the attendants signaling for the 94-year-old man to stop. the are car reached speeds up to 40 miles an hour and crashed its way through. eventually it did come to a stop when had it hit a fans. apparently the man got the gas pedal mixed up with the brake.

you and julianne moore take part in that. have you had any personal experience with the disease prior to this? >> i have not, no. and have not. but i oddly feel i've been able to reap the benefits of this experience without the pain that goes along with actually having a relative or a friend that has to struggle through that. >> you learned a lot about it because of the movie? >> yeah. hopefully that energy, when something is truly real on screen and somebody is actually experiencing something and to be in julie oon's presence, you have to be a sociopath to not have a real connection and be truly affected by what she's doing. it's contagious. it comes across. i think audiences are going to be able to grow in the same way that we did. >> let me talk about you a little bit. i haven't interviewed you all that many times. the times i have, i come away with the idea that you're very comfortable with one aspect of this career, the working actress. >> yeah. >> and less comfortable with the public persona aspect.

personality. for some puppies, this would be way too much. for him, it's kind of his personality. he has it in him that he can deal with this environment very well. he wants to get down and explore right now. >> saxon, will the chaos of everyday life here in a studio on a live show will this prove to be beneficial as a guide dog? >> yes, definitely. it will make him a very well-adjusted dog. he's having a lot of great experiences here. he's seeing novel objects such as the cameras, hearing all different kinds of sounds. even just to walk in on the street is very exciting for him, so that's a great experience for him. and he's getting to meet a lot of people and learning to work with lots of different types of people and different people that maybe he doesn't know as well is a great experience for him. >> for people keeping score at home how many accidents has he had in the studio? >> well he's had a few in his little pen. two, i think. but just in general, he's done really well. it's a work in progress so it's going to happen. >> you can let him down. or are you not supposed to? i don't know. >> that's not one of the puppy
